8 Things to Remember When Starting Your First Ecommerce Online Store

But, creating a thriving online business has never been easy, and as more and more competitors enter the market, will never be easy. Research your target market to understand your audience and the value your product/service will provide.
Google surveys are a great medium to survey potential customers or existing customers of a competitor brand to understand their emotions towards that product.

Choose an e-commerce platform that offers multiple features to help in managing your site. For instance, WineDirect is a great e-commerce platform for wineries that offer an online store, manage B2B wholesale services, and manage POS for restaurants. Similarly, Shopify, Magento, Woocommerce are a few popular e-commerce platforms.

Select a domain name and a web hosting provider. A domain name is a website name that should be relevant, meaningful, and memorable. This website needs a hosting provider where all the website files will be stored. Some popular hosting providers include Godaddy, BlueHost, DreamHost, and A2Hosting.

Consider connecting a content management system to manage, edit and publish content on your website. Set up payment processing and ensure that process is seamless. 

Once your website is ready, link web analytics to your website to track user behaviour on your website. Google Analytics is a free tool to understand the behavioural flow of users who come on the website. This can be viewed in Real-time too.

Optimise your website with relevant keywords to your website. Use tools like SEMRush for keyword research for your target location. Ensure your website follows the basic SEO guidelines of on-page optimization. For instance, ensure every page has metas, the loading speed on desktop and mobile is optimum and there are no invalid pages/links.

Develop your digital marketing plan that shall incorporate all platforms where you will advertise, the type of ads, the content, and the imagery. For example, Google shopping ads are great for an e-commerce website as compared to paid search because of their visibility. Shopping ads get the premium spot in the search result as shown in the image below.

Consider incorporating a mix of social media marketing, email marketing, content marketing, video marketing, pay per click, display and retargeting, native/ programmatic, affiliate marketing, and influencer marketing.

Lastly, save the abandoned cart and always up-sell and cross-sell. Most brands have an abandonment rate of 69 percent. Using plugins to send reminder emails with the right incentives to customers who have products added to their cart but did not purchase can reduce the cart abandonment rate. 

Additionally, adding relevant products or complementary products to up-sell at Thank you pages, bottom or right bar of product pages can increase the average order value.
